SIGHTSEEING Ajmer:
Adhai-Din-Ka Jhonpara :
Adhai-Din-Ka Jhonpara is situated on the outskirts of
the town, this remarkable composition is an exquisite
example of early Indo-Islamic architecture. Designed
by Abu Bakr of Herat, the mosque is believed to have
been built in two and a half days, and is thus named
Adhai-din. According to another story the name is
derived from a two and a half day fair held here every
year.
Nasiyan (Jain Temple) :
The Nasiyan Jain temple situated on the Prithvi
Raj Marg in Ajmer, it is also known as Red Temple.
Devoted to the first Jain Tirthankara Rishabdeoji, the
Nasiyan Jain Temple also has a museum of considerable
size that displays objects related to Jain beliefs and
mythology. Digambar Jain temple which has a double-
storey hall adjacent to the main temple. The hall
displays a series of great gold plated wooden figures
depicting legends from Jain mythology.
Dargah :
Dargah Sharif' or 'Holy Dargah' is one of the most
sacred Muslim shrines in the country. respected by
both Hindus and Muslims, it is the tomb of Khwaja
Moin-ud-din Chisti, a Sufi saint who came from Persia
and dedicated his life to the service and upliftment
of the poor and downtrodden. A white marble mosque on
the right side of the courtyard is the Akbari Masjid.
Another mosque in the courtyard was built by Emperor
Shahjahan. Every year Urs is held
here for six days in his remembrance. It is said that
when he was 114 years old, the saint locked himself in
a room for six days to pray and left his mortal body
in solitude.
Ana Sagar Lake :
In a valley surrounded by hills lies the Ana Sagar
Lake, an artificial lake which was made in the
12th century by building a dam across the river Luni
and named after the then ruler Anaji Chauhana. The
catchments were built with the help of local populace.
The 'Baradari' pavilions was built by Shah Jahan, to
make easy his long stays in Ajmer. the Baradari and
the adjoining parks are the lungs of city and favorite
outing spot. The Daulat Bagh on the banks of the lake
has a series of white marble baradaris (pavilions)
built by Shah Jahan in 1637. However, the lake dries
up in summer. The temple of Khobra Behroon on the
south bank of Ana Sagar offers a panoramic view
of the lake and Dault Bagh. The temple’s name is
derived from the word khobra, which means
`mischievous’, and according to tradition a newly wed
couple must pay their respects to the temple or else –
married life can be full of unforeseen complications!
Taragarh Fort :
Constructed in 1354 A.D., the Taragarh Fort in
Ajmer is a fantastic illustration of Rajasthani
architecture. Six imposing gates and a thick
crenellated wall guard the entrance to this erstwhile
Chauhan bastion. You are welcome to explore the royal
secrets of Taragarh though a section of this massive
composition is not open for public viewing.
See the awe-inspiring Bhim Burj i.e. a massive
battlement on which rests a large canon and admire the
massive stone water reservoirs built within the fort.
The main gateway that leads you to the fort is
decorated with stone sculpture of elephants. The fort
also has Miran Saheb ki Dargah who was the governor of
the fort and laid down his life in an encounter.
Taragarh Fort was an important center of military
activity during the Mughal domination in Ajmer.
