About Badrinath
Referred to as 'tapobhoomi' in ancient Indian scriptures, Badrinath was supposedly a dense forest cloaked with green berry trees. Located on the right bank of River Alaknanda, Badrinath is considered to be an extremely sacred destination by devout Hindus.Badrinath is one of the four sacred Hindu 'Dhams' or pilgrimage destinations that every Hindu tries to visit atleast once in a lifetime.Situated at an altitude of 3133 meters above the sea level, Badrinath is associated with several mythological legends.

Major Tourist Attractions in Badrinath
Joshimath
The winter home of Shri Badrinathji is situated on the slopes above the confluence of Alaknanda and Dhauliganga. It is one of the four 'maths' established by Adi Guru Shankaracharya.

Valley of Flowers
This is just amazing hangout for the flower and nature lovers. So named because of the abundance of flowers that bloom here. It is one of the most picturesque valleys in the world. Nearby flows the river Pushpawati while the massive Rataban peak forms a splendid backdrop. The appropriate time to visit it is July & August when the flowers bloom.

Govindghat
The confluence of alaknanda and Lakshman Ganga rivers. It has an imposing Gurudwara named after Guru Gobind Singh. Situated between Joshimath and Badrinath it is the starting point for the trek to this valley. From Gobindghat, it is 16 kms. away. Ponies can also be hired from Gobindghat.

Hemkund Sahib :
Situated 43 Kms away from Badrinath, Hemkund Sahib is an important pilgrimage centre of the Sikhs and Hindus. The sacred shrine is located along the shores of holy lake, Hemkund. It is the place where Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru unified with God after prolonged mediation in his previous birth. Another attraction is the Lakshman Temple, where Laskhman performed his penance.

Getting There
How to Reach Badrinath by Air: There is no airport in Badrinath. The nearest airport from Badrinath is Jolly Grant in Dehradun. A number of airlines operate regular flights to Dehradun connecting it to cities in northern India.

How to Reach Badrinath by Road : Despite the fact that Badrinath is located in the remote Garhwal Himalayas, there is good road connection for the place. There is excellent metal road network between Rishikesh and Badrinath. Rishikesh in turn is well connected by roads to Dehradun, Delhi.

How to Reach Badrinath by Rail : Badrinath does not have any rail station. But the Rishikesh, the nearest rail station is only 300kms (approx) away. Several good trains link Rishikesh to cities like Kolkata (Howrah), Mumbai, Delhi and Lucknow.

Badrinathjee temple remains open from May to mid of november only.
