COCHIN
|
Kochi
or Cochin is a beautiful city situated on
the Western Coast of India facing the Arabian
Sea, and rightfully called the ‘Queen of the
Arabian Sea’. It has a rich network of
backwaters and is the culture and heritage
centre of Kerala. Cochin known as the
Queen of Arabian Sea, is the Commercial Capital
of Kerala. An enormous potential exists in
Kerala, especially Cochin for the use of
Information Technology. |
About Cochin
Kochi (Cochin), the
commercial and industrial capital of Kerala, has one
of the finest natural harbours in the world. Ancient
mariners from Arabia, China, Holland, Britain and
Portugal have all left their mark on this beautiful
island city.
One of the finest natural harbours on the Arabian Sea
coast, Kochi (Cochin), earlier known as Cochin
has been a port of call for foreign traders from early
times. Its cosmopolitan character is reflected in the
buildings and structures representing different
regions of the world. A city of peninsulas and
islands, today it is Kerala's commercial hub.
Major Tourist
Attractions in Cochin
Bolghatty Palace
Bolghatty Palace was built by the Dutch on the
Southern Extremity of the Bolghatty Island just across
the High Court Jetty. One of the attractions is the
mini golf course in the Palace grounds. There are
several vantage points for lovely views of the harbour
and the sea. The Balghatty Palace was built by
the Dutch in the year AD 1744. It used to be the seat
of the British Resident, but is now used as a Tourist
Bunglow by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation.
Chinese Fishing Nets
This is a truly splendid tour attraction in Cochin/Kochi.
The place has these huge cantilevered fishing nets
that were brought by the Indian traders from the court
of Kublai Khan. The best place to enjoy the lowering
of nets and its catch is the Vasco de Gama square.
Dutch Palace
As one may surmise from the name, the Dutch were not
the original builders of the Mattancherry Palace. It
was built by the Portuguese in 1557 as a gift to the
Raja of Cochin, Veera Kerala Varma, partly as a
compensation for a temple they'd destroyed and partly
as a bribe to gain favors from the ruler. It was only
in 1663, when the Dutch won over from the Portuguese,
that they renovated the palace and thus, it is known
as the 'Dutch palace' too.
Fort Kochi beach
A leisurely walk through the lanes of the city is the
best way to discover historic Fort Kochi Beach.
A favourite haunt of Kochiites, the beach at Fort
Kochi is a tranquil experience at any time of the
day. Do it alone or in the company of your loved ones,
it offers the ideal ambiance to relax and to let your
thoughts soar to new heights of creativity.
Hill Palace
Built in the 19th century by Raja of Kochi, the Kochi
province was ruled from here. The palace has been
converted into a museum displaying a fine collection of
articles used by the Rajas of Kochi apart from many
archaeological findings.
