About Haridwar
Haridwar is situated at the base of the Shivalik
hills, where the Ganga, comes down from the mighty
Himalayas meets the plains. Haridwar, literally is 'The
gateway to the Gods'. "This place is very beautiful", at
one sight one will say so and fall in love with the scenic
beauty of the blend of height and plains. A Gateway to the
four pilgrimage of Uttarakhand, Haridwar is also
known as Gangadwar, Tapovan and Mayapuri. In its long
history back to pre-historic time, the Haridwar got
it name from the rishis.
According to the mythology it is known as Kapilsthan.
legend goes that the suryavnshi Prince Bhagirath performed
penance here to salvage the souls of his ancestors who had
perished due to the curse of the sage Kapila. |

Tourist Attractions in Haridwar
Har Ki Pauri
This ghat is one of the most sacred ghats in India. People
say that this ghat was built by Vikramaditya in memory of
his brother Bhartrihari. This ghat is also known as
Brahmakund. In the evening a Maha Aarti is performed on
this ghat. It is an event which is a must, not be missed
by any visitor.
Mansa Devi
Situated at the top of Bilwa Parwat, the temple of Goddess
Mansa Devi is a popular tourist destination, especially
because of the cable cars, which offer a picturesque view
of the entire city. The main temple houses two idols of
the Goddess, one with three mouths and five arms, while
the other one has eight arms.
Chandi Devi
This temple is 6 km. from Haridwar on the top of a hill
called the Neel Parvat, on the other side of the river
Ganga. The story goes that Chanda-Munda the army chief of
the demons Shumbh-Nishumbh were killed by Goddess Chandi
hence the name Chandi Devi.
Sapt Rishi
At one place Ganga divides herself into seven small
streams. This place is known as the Sapt Rishi and
provides a very pleasing sight.
Daksha Mahadev Temple
The ancient temple of Daksha Mahadev is situated in the
south Kankhal town. According to Hindu mythology, King
Daksha Prajapati, father of Sati (Lord Shiva's first
wife), performed a yagna here, to which he deliberately
did not invite Lord Shiva. When he arrived uninvited, he
was further insulted by the king, seeing this Sati felt
was infuriated and self-immolated herself in the yagna
kund.
Getting There
Air: In the region Air Services are available only
upto Jollygrant airport in Dehradun which has one airport,
Jolly Grant. Haridwar is 35 kms. from Jolly Grant.
Rail: This major pilgrimage center has been well
connected by trains to all the major towns of India. In
fact trains bring the major load of pilgrims and tourist
inflow to Haridwar.
Road: Haridwar, on the main highway, is connected
to all major centre in the region and other parts of the
country by road.
