BHARATPUR : Bharatpur is
the 'Eastern Gateway to Rajasthan'. This erstwhile princely
state was founded by the great Jat ruler Maharaja Suraj Mal in
the 18th century and earned its name as a powerful Jat state.
The place derives its name from Bharat, the brother of Lord
Rama of the Ramayana fame, who ruled the kingdom in the
absence of Rama. Located in the eastern part of Rajasthan,
Keoladeo Ghana or Bharatpur National Park is 176 km away from
Delhi, and 50 km west of Agra. One of the most impressive bird
sanctuaries in India, the park is famous for indigenous water-
birds as well as migratory birds, from as far away as Siberia
and Central Asia.
