BIKANER : Bikaner was
founded in 1488 AD, by Rao Bikaji, one of the fourteen sons of
the famous Rathore king Rao Jodha. Rao Jodha is credited with
founding the city of Jodhpur. The city came into being as a
link in the overland trading route. Bikaner boasts a stunning
fort and a royal old walled city dotted with some beautiful
havelis and encircled by 7km of high walls. The place has been
able to retain certain unspoilt charm. Some beautiful
intricately carved havelis are worth to visit and you will
also get the opportunity to visit the famous rat temple at
nearby Deshnoke, the Junagarh Fort and the government
camel-breeding farm. It's worth spending a day or two just
wandering around Bikaner, exploring the old city, visiting the
ancient Jain temples and Junagarh Fort and watching dyers at
work. Bikaner is also noted for its skilled lacquer work and
handicrafts.
