About Kerala Wildlife Sanctuaries
Kerala has about 30% of its land
cover accounted for, by forests. The jungles of Kerala
are famous for the Elephants and Tigers besides other
animals. Periyar Wild Life Sanctuary,
Parimbikulam Wild Life Scantuary, Eravikulam National
Park are the major wild life centers. Kumarakom,
Thattekkad, Myladumpara are the main Bird watching
centers.

Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary
The Thattekkad bird sanctuary was formed in the year
1983, and it also comes in the catchments area of the
Bhoothathankettu dam. The only one of its kind in Kerala,
this sanctuary was designed by Dr. Salim Ali, the renowned
ornithologist.

Aaralam Wildlife Sanctuary
Aaralam Wildlife Sanctuary is a tranquil little
sanctuary on the slopes of the Western Ghats. The highest
peak of Katti Betta, covered with tropical and semi-
evergreen forests rises to a majestic height of 1145 m
above sea level.
A variety of flora and fauna endemic to the Western Ghats
is found here. Herds of deer, elephants, boar and bison
are quite common. Leopards, Jungle Cats and various types
of Squirrels have also been sighted.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the rain
shadow region of Western Ghats of Kerala, India., and
represents a large number of plants and animals unique to
the thorny vegetation.
Apart from the dry thorn forests, due to the significant
variation in altitude and rainfall, it has a wide array of
habitat types like deciduous forests, dry thorny forest,
riparian types, sholas and grasslands that are
interspersed with plains, hillocks, rocks and cliffs which
provide microhabitats for varied forms of life.

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary
Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, about 19 km from Kozhikode
and 7 km from Beypore port on the Arabian Sea, Malappuram
district, north Kerala
The Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is spread over a cluster of
islands in a scenic area surrounded by hillocks where the
Kadalundi River flows into the Arabian Sea. The place is
locally known as Kadalundi Nagaram. This virgin land is
the abode of a hundred species of native birds and over 60
varieties of migratory birds that flock here in large
numbers during February-March.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, situated on the banks of the
Vembanand Lake is known for its varied avian population.
Local varieties such as waterfowls, cuckoos and owls, as
well as the migratory Siberian Cranes can be viewed here.
A 14-acre bird sanctuary adds to the natural beauty of
Kumarakom. Birds (waterfowl, water ducks, cuckoos, wild
ducks etc.) nest and spend happy summers here. Birds like
Siberian storks migrate here every year.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
Periyar Tiger Reserve lies in the Western Ghats in the
Idukki District of the Indian state of Kerala. The terrain
of the Reserve is undulating and the drainge is dendrite.
The north-eastern boundary of the Reserve is a ridge,
which also forms boundary between the states of Kerala and
Tamil Nadu for 90 km.
The Periyar Wildlife Park has been built around the
Periyar Lake that came into existence in the year 1895 as
a result of the construction of a dam on the River Periyar
in Kerala, India. This artificial lake is surrounded by
swampy marshes and grasslands that provide a natural
habitat for a number of wild animals.
