MEENAKSHI TEMPLE

The Meenakshi Temple In Madurai in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu is an important pilgrimage centre in India. Dedicated to Lord Shiva and his wife Meenakshi, the temple attained its present architectural excellence during the reign of Nayaka rulers. The construction of the temple, however, was started by the Pandya King, Kulasekhara.

The Meenakshi temple has a religious icon of South India and is known for its fantastic and splendid sculptures. Once Indra killed a demon performing penance. However, he could not get rid of his guilt and wandered from place to place with a heavy heart.

Azhagar Koil: A popular temple amidst the people from south, for conducting auspicious marriages, the gold image of Azhagar travels symbolizes the celestial image during the Chithirai Festival. The temple is located 8-km northeast of Madurai on a picturesque hilltop. It is believe to be the place of Lord Vishnu.
The West Gopura: The west Gopura was built in the fourteenth century, a troubled period in the history of the temple and the city following the Muslim invasions.
