Hampi the city of ruins was the seat
of Vijayanagar Empire in very old times. After the
destruction of Vijayanagar Empire by raiding Mogul
invader, the city was reduced to ruins amid scenes of
savage massacre and horrors. However, once the vaunter of
riches this capital city is now singing songs of ruins.
The ruins of Hampi of the 14 th century are spread over 26
sq. km. area. It can be said that being protected by
raging river Tungabhadra in the north and rocky granite
ridges on the other three sides, the ruins of Hampi sings
the glory of wonderful wealth. Besides, this city of ruins
is very popular for monuments in Karnataka . And of the
various monuments the Ugra Narasimha Statue Hampi holds
real importance.
Ugra Narasimha statuette is located to the south of Hampi.
It is a very big rock idol that was cut to from the image
of Narasimha. This idol projects the fierce aspect of Lord
Vishnu. It is a 6.7 m. high statue. Initially, in the
statue there was a smaller image of Lakshmi on one knee of
the Lord Vishnu. However, due to the massacre this
probably has fallen off.
The Ugra Narasimha Statue Hampi depicts Narasimha as
seated on the coils of Shesha Naga. This statue contains
the seven heads of Shesha Naga arching over Narasimha to
form a canopy.
