DHARAMSALA
Dharamshala is the district hqr. of Kangra
district. This is a hill station lying on the spur of the
Dhauladhar range about 18kms. north east of Kangra town.
Hill station is wooded with oak and conifer trees and snow
capped mountains enfold three sides of the town while the
valley stretches in front. The snow line is perhaps more
easily accessible at Dharamshala than at any other
hill resort and it is possible to trek to snow point after
an early morning's start. In 1905, tragedy struck
Dharamshala when an earthquake leveled it completely.

ATTRACTIONS
Kangra Art Museum: Kangra Art Museum. The museum is
thronged by the tourists and the natives alike and is the
pride of Dharamshala. The Kangra Art Museum
reflects the arts, crafts, history and culture of the
people of the Kangra valley. It also mirrors the history

War Memorial: Set amidst beautiful surroundings ,
this memorial is built near the entry point to
Dharamshala to commemorate the memory of those who
fought valiantly for the defense of the motherland.
Dall Lake: The lake lies amidst hills and stately
fir trees 11kms. from Lower Dharamshala connected by
motorable road. It is the starting point of excursions and
trekking and is located next to the Tibetan Children's
village.
St. John's Church: 7 km upward from Dharamshala,
between Forsyth Ganj and Mcleod Ganj lies the charming St.
John's Church built with dressed stone and having
beautiful stained glass windows, popularly called, the
church of St. John in Wilderness. Under the shed of deodar
branches, a memorial has been erected over the body of the
then British Viceroy of India, Lord Elgin who died in
Dharamshala in 1863.
The Shrine of Bhagsunath: Just 11-km from the town
center of Dharamsala is the ancient temple of Bhagsunath.
There are many fresh water springs close to the temple,
which are considered sacred by the Hindus.

Hang Gliding
3.5 km from Palampur is predominantly Buddhist town of Bir
and 14 km from Bir is Billing, a beacon for Hang gliders,
the world over. In the month of May/June a tented colony
is set up by Himachal Pradesh tourism to facilitate
hang-gliders. At this time all the roads lead to billing.
Trekking & Mountaineering
There are many peaks between 3,500m to 5,000 in Dhauladhar
ranges. Most of the treks which start from Dharamsala,
Palampur or Baijnath are of 5 to 8 days duration and
ultimately terminate at Bharmaur and Chamba, over the
majestic Dhauladhar ranges. Dharamsala to Chamba over
Bhimghasutri Pass, Dharamsala to Holi and then to
Manimahesh over Talang Pass; Palampur to Holi over
Shinghor Pass; Palampur to Dharamsala via Indradhar Pass
and Baijnath to Manali over Thamsar Pass, are some of the
existing treks.
How to Reach
By Air: Though there is no airport in Dharamsala,
the nearest airport is Kangra airport which is located at
a distance of 10 km from Dharamsala and there is another
airport called is Gaggal airport which is located at a
distance of 13 km.
By Rail: You can also access Dharamsala by the rail
transport since the nearest airport is located in
Pathankot and is located at distance of 90 km from
Dharamsala.
By Road: Dharamsala is connected to the other towns
by the National Highway-1. Getting to Dharamsala by road
network is quite easy with the facility of road transport
that further links the various other destinations of India
including Delhi, Chandigarh, Shimla and Pathankot by the
smooth and efficient road network.
