KARTHIGAL DEEPAM

Karthigai Deepam is the oldest festival of South India, which is also the most elaborate and the most important festival. Karthigai Deepam falls in the Tamil month of Karthigai when the star Krithigai is on the ascendant and usually occurs on a full moon day.
The ten-days festival is also known as 'the Festival of Lights' and is said to be the extension of the Deepavali festival of India. In some communities, people keep doubling the number of lamps every day from the day of Deepavali till Karthigai Deepam and thus the burning lamps present an enchanting spectacle during the night.
A wide assortment of lamps lit in all sizes, shapes and colors adorns the temples and the courtyards of the houses. This festival is considered as an auspicious occasion and is also believed to ward off the evils and usher in prosperity and joy.
